What to do when your Dreams change

When change happens

Always remember, you have the power to change your life because you have the power to change your mind – unknown author

I always encourage your to dream big, make plans, follow your heart’s desire and yet I hear you when you say that it all feels elusive and just out of reach.  Sometimes it seems no matter how hard you try things don’t work the way you expect and other times it’s like you forget why you wanted that dream in the first place – and yet you keep going for fear of being seen as someone who doesn’t follow through.

Now there can be all kinds of reasons why something isn’t working and for some of us – me included at times – there’s that niggling, surreptitiously hidden little gremlin called Fear that raises it’s head anytime the prospect of success is on the horizon.  The good news is – if that’s the case we definitely have ways of dealing with it!!

On the other hand – what if it really is time to let go of a dream and take another path?  How do you know?

“Sometimes on the way to our dream you get lost and find a better one”

What’s your passion?

What’s going on?  Do you have the same priorities now as when you started?

Do you still want the same things as before?

Is your dream still a reality?  If not, what’s changed?

“Some of us think holding on makes us strong: But sometimes it’s letting go” Herme Hese

Are you scared of what others might say?

When you started on this path full of verve and passion I have no doubt you shared your vision with anyone who would listen.  Are you scared of what they might think?

If you’re in a dilemma about what to do remember, you are the one who knows what’s right for you.

Ask yourself – is this really your dream or are you trying to live up to other people’s expectations?  Are you living your life from hand me down beliefs, values, behaviours, attitudes and dreams?  Is there a void inside that you long to fill with something that nourishes your spirit?

Are you missing other opportunities?

Have you been so immersed in what it is you want to achieve that your ‘tunnel vision’ has made you oblivious to other opportunities that are passing you by?

Maybe it’s time to let go and trust yourself?

Hanging on so tightly to something that you daren’t relax for a moment creates tension and fear that makes it almost impossible to recognise new and better opportunities, it blocks your forward movement.

“We must be willing to let go of the life we have planned, so as to accept the life that is waiting for us ” Joseph Campbell

Letting go, releasing your dream, changing direction doesn’t necessarily equate to failure – it’s really a matter of perception – What have you experienced, learned, received along the way?  How have you grown?  What does your version of success look like now?

“When I let go of what I am, I become what I might be”   Lao Tzo

Make sure you’re letting go for the right reasons

Maybe you placed limitations or expectations on how your dream was supposed to look.  Maybe you can keep a part of it, create a different version?

Give yourself permission to feel sad, disappointed, grieve if necessary.

Sometimes you might just need a bit of space.  Try something completely new.  Finding out what you don’t want can confirm what you do want.

Ask yourself:

Are you feeling overwhelmed? How can you simplify things?

What’s the worst thing that could happen?

Will it matter a year from now?

What would you say to someone  else if they were in your shoes?

And if all else fails go HERE and tap along to the FEAR OF CHANGE

And then come back here and tell us what happened for you
